I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 04-23-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons.

We had a neighbor when I was a boy who could not whistle a tune.  But he whistled a lot and loud.  He was a great neighbor and a good man.  His whistling, however, was a monotonous, monotone sound you could hear a long way off.  It was apparent he was happy, though.

You might be one of those who can’t whistle or sing beautifully, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sing at church or other functions.  The Bible only tells us to make a joyful noise, not sing pretty.

Psalm 95:1-2 (KJV)
1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

Four other Psalms use the same phrase.  They are Psalm 66:1, 81:1, 98:4 & 6, and 100:1.

I have been amazed at how many people do not sing in worship over my years of ministry.  I am not always sure why, but one thing I know is that worship of God is intended to be participatory.  It is not just another spectator event.  It is important for us to give an effort in singing.  Many of our great hymns and praise songs contain good theology.  There are songs we sing about God, songs we sing to each other and songs we sing to God.  Those we sing to God are the best, I think.

If you sing badly, just don’t do any solos, etc.  Maybe you just need to sing in a low tone but sing in worship.  If nothing else, it will encourage your pastor and staff and I am sure it will please God no matter how you sound.  04-23-09
