I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 08-08-09

The Born Loser
Cartoonology Devotional 08-08-09
Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
It is true that men who claim to be self-made can blame no one else for their failures and disappointments but themselves.  I had a professor in college many years ago that claimed to be self-made.  He came out of the slums of New York to earn several degrees in education, and, indeed, he had been successful, at least by the world's standards.
I would often talk this professor in the hallway during the short break from our class period each week.  I soon learned why he considered himself self-made.  He was a professing atheist who had no interest in discussions about God.  He even told me that he didn't need God because he was not a sinner.  Our discussions were interesting, because he was never belligerent or rude.  He was just comfortable with being an atheist.
I suppose when you leave God out of your life, you can think of yourself as self-made.  The truth, however, is that you would be nothing without God whether or not you believe in him.  It has been said, "God said it, I believe it, and that settles it".  Someone else said, "God said it, and that settles it whether I believe it or not".  The latter statement is the truer one.
1 Corinthians 8:2-3 (HCSB)
2 If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it.
3 But if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.  08-08-09
