I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology

Betty
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

The loss of memory is something we all have at times, but for the millions who suffer dementia or Alzheimer’s, it is tragic and heartbreaking. Simply forgetting things can be a plus, however. The Apostle Paul indicated this.

Philippians 3:12-14 (NKJV)
12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Some things are hard to forget, some things we can’t forget, some things we shouldn’t forget and then there are things we should forget. Forgetting is often a choice. Even God chooses to forget.

Hebrews 10:16-17 (NKJV)
16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,"
17 then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

It is not that God can’t remember our sins; it is that He chooses not to remember them. The biblical concept here is that God no longer holds our sin against us when we have placed our faith in Christ and His substitutionary death on the cross for our sins. In other words, God does not impute his judgment upon us but rather his righteousness.

Romans 4:7-8 (NKJV)
7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered;
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin."

In speaking of Abraham, Paul said:

Romans 4:20-22 (NKJV)
20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
22 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."

The Greek word for impute is an accounting term. Therefore, God reckons or credits His righteousness to those who come to Him by faith through His son Jesus. What great forgiveness! What great assurance! 02-18-09
