I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-16-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Whenever we would catch our Grandfather Armstrong talking to himself, he would say, “I like talking to someone who has good sense.” And then he would say, “It’s OK as long as you don’t answer yourself.”

Have you thought about it? Cell phones now make it possible for one to literally talk to himself whether it be cell phone to cell phone or cell phone to landline. Cell phone mania has taken over the world.

An old man was praying in church, but he was speaking so low no one could hear him. Finally one person in the congregation said, “Speak up, we can’t hear you!” The old man shouted out, “I’m not talking to you!”

We must remember who we are talking to when it comes to prayer. Jesus criticized the religious leaders of His day for praying in public only to be seen and heard by others. He said that if this is the only reason for your prayer, being seen and heard by others is the only reward you will get. In other words God will not hear your prayer. I guess praying just to hear yourself would amount to the same thing.

Matthew 6:5 (NKJV)
5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 06-16-09
