I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology 11-18-09

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Life is full of paradoxes.  Here's one.  The more we have the less thankful we are in general.  Usually, the more we get the more we want.  Commerce gets it.  Somehow, we don't, and gratitude seems to be very much in short supply these days.

One reason for that is the entitlement attitude that permeates our society.  This is, in part, due to our government.  Lyndon Baines Johnson's Great Society has led us to a society that thinks, "Everybody owes me."  Here is a line from Johnson's May 22, 1964 speech at Ann Arbor, MI proposing the idea.  "I intend to establish working groups to prepare a series of conferences and meetings—on the cities, on natural beauty, on the quality of education, and on other emerging challenges. From these studies, we will begin to set our course toward the Great Society."

In principle, the idea of eliminating poverty, ignorance and racial injustice was a good one, but in reality, it has been a failure.  Rewarding people for being nonproductive never makes any society great.  Like with most government-run programs, inefficiency and greed swallows up everything.  Today, many still believe the government is supposed to be big brother while big brother now has a national debt totaling over 12 Trillion dollars, which is growing by $3.84 billion every day.   See the U.S. National Debt Clock at  www.brillig.com/debt_clock/.

The Apostle Paul gave us a great principle in the Bible for promoting gratitude and a great society.

2 Thessalonians 3:10 (NKJV)
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11-18-09
