I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-23-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Everyone likes to win, but for most of us losing is more common. For this reason, I have a concern for kids in sports. There is too much emphasis on winning and not enough on having fun and just doing your best. Let’s take some of the pressure off of kids and make the game what it is – a game.

I believe that it is just as important for kids to learn how to lose, as it is to learn how to win. There is too much poor sportsmanship. Participation and sportsmanship should be the main emphases. Maybe this is one reason we have so many selfish people in our churches today who fight so much, or won’t “play the game” if they can’t get their way, and who will walk away from their God-given responsibilities at the drop of a hat.

Most of life requires some form of compromise in order to survive. Now, I am not talking about compromising on biblical theology or principles. We can usually agree on these very well, anyway. It is the color of the carpet or the choice of music styles, etc. that usually get the best of us. If we have a servant’s heart, we can always find a win/win solution to these things. There are really no losers when love and loyalty remain the theme.
