I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 04-25-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Noah was young man when he had his first children, Shem, Ham and Japheth at the age of 500.  He was only 600 when the floods came, and he lived to the ripe old age of 950 years.  The story of Noah is an amazing one and there is much to admire about him.

Getting older does not have to slow us down in our Christian service.  Getting older can make us more qualified.  This can be especially true if we have character like unto Noah.  Noah is described as one who found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 6:8).  He is described as a just man (Genesis 6:9), obedient (Genesis 6:22), righteous (Genesis 7:1), remembered by God (Genesis 8:1), blessed by God (Genesis 9:1) and a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5).   Pretty good references from a pretty good source!  Not only that, God placed a pretty good reminder of him in the sky with its red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet colors.  You and I might not have a rainbow memorial, but we can obtain a crown of glory.

Proverbs 16:31 (NKJV)
31 The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, If it is found in the way of righteousness.

All men grow gray with age, but only those who grow old pursuing righteousness are crowned with glory.  What is this glory?  It is the glory of God’s presence and blessing in old age, and such die with the greatest of dignity, honor and hope.

There is an old Yiddish proverb that says, “Old age, to the unlearned, is winter; to the learned, it is harvest time.” (Encyclopedia of 15,000 Illustrations: Signs of the Times)  The latter must be doubly so for those who have God’s wisdom.  04-25-09
