I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 09-10-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

The phrase "You can't see the forest for the trees" simply means that one has tunnel vision or is unable to see the whole picture. This is often due to our inability to be objective about our situation, ourselves or about others, or maybe we are just too close to a situation to see it objectively. The viewpoint of a third party is often needed.

I am reminded of an incident in my childhood when one of my six siblings brought home a form from school that needed to be signed by the parents and returned. The form was partially completed, and one question was incorrectly answered. It asked if anyone in the family was handicapped. The answer was marked "no".

My father was handicapped. He lost his left hand in a furniture factory accident at a young age. Most of us children knew him only this way, but for the most part, we never thought much about it. Out of necessity, he had learned to cope very well and could do almost anything others could do. He could tie his shoe as quick as anyone.

It wasn't until after my father died that I realized how self-conscious he was about his handicap. While looking through a box of old photos, I noticed that in all those that included my dad, except one, he had his left nub in his pocket, behind his back or behind some else's back. I have regretted that I was not more sensitive to his feelings. I guess I couldn't see the forest for the trees.

Proverbs 4:5 (NKJV)
5 Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 09-10-09
