I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 08-28-09

Cartoonology Devotional 08-28-09
Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

The Bible starts with "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". "In the beginning" is a great narrative hook because several things are implied.  First, God existed before anything else.  Second, the Bible does not attempt to explain how God came to be.  He simply was and is.   Third, the Bible assumes the existence of God rather than trying to prove it.

I figured out a long time ago that if I could explain where God came from, I would be a god myself.  Of course, I am not, and I am very far from it.  Neither will I ever become a god as some religious circles claim is possible.  And, based on this text, neither could God have ever been a man.  Man didn't exist until God created him.

Another interesting aspect of this text is that the Hebrew word translated as create means to create from nothing.  Mankind can create, too but not from nothing.  He creates only from what God has first provided.

An atheist might say that no one can prove the existence of God.  The truth is he cannot prove the nonexistence of God.  In fact you cannot prove the nonexistence of anything.  If you searched for it and did not find it, would that alone prove its nonexistence?  No, because maybe you missed looking somewhere.  Did you search the entire universe?

A Russian astronaut said that he did not see God while traveling through space.  Another answered by saying, "If you had stepped out of your space suit, you would have".

1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God."  08-28-09
